Understanding and Preventing UTIs

By Dr. Ariel Moradzadeh, Urologist, Assistant Professor of Urology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Group

Understanding UTIs

UTIs are incredibly common, affecting millions of people worldwide, especially women. Up to 40% of women will have a UTI at some time in their lives, and approximately 30% of women who have had a UTI, will have another UTI within 6 months. When you look at the numbers, there are 30 million antibiotic prescriptions written for uncomplicated UTIs every year. The problems that can arise with antibiotic overuse, is the potential to develop resistant bacteria over time, which is why prevention is essential.

Preventive Measures

Preventing UTIs involves making some simple lifestyle changes including the following:

  1. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help flush out bacteria. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day. Dilution is the solution to pollution!
  2. Timed voiding: Avoid holding your urine for extended periods of time. Void regularly during the daytime to prevent a buildup of bacteria in the bladder.

Supplementation

Taking supplements that include specific vitamins and plant extracts can be beneficial for those prone to UTIs. The following can be beneficial and include:

  1. Cranberry Extract: Contains Proanthocyanidins (PACs) that help bind to bacteria and prevent the bacteria from binding to the lining of the bladder and urinary tract. Research shows these powerful PACs can reduce the risk of recurrent UTIs.
  2. Pine Bark Extract: Rich in antioxidants, it enhances urinary health by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Clinical studies show it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it ideal for preventing UTIs. Think of pine bark extract as your urinary system’s personal bodyguard.
  3. Vitamin C: Acidifies urine, creating an environment that’s tough for bacteria to thrive in. It also boosts your immune system to help fight off infections more effectively. Vitamin C is like giving your bladder an extra layer of armor.
  4. D-Mannose: A natural sugar that binds to E. coli, preventing it from adhering to the urinary tract. Studies have shown D-Mannose to be effective in reducing recurrent UTIs. Think of d-mannose as a decoy that lures the bacteria away from your bladder walls.

The Efficacy of Pine Bark Extract (Pycnogenol)

Pine bark extract, also known as Pycnogenol, has been extensively studied for its health benefits. Here’s what research has demonstrated:

  • A study in the ‘Journal of Dietary Supplements’ found Pycnogenol significantly reduced symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency and improved endothelial function. This means it helps keep your blood vessels healthy, which is essential for overall health.
  • Another study in the ‘International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics’ demonstrated that Pycnogenol reduced inflammatory markers and oxidative stress, crucial for preventing infections and supporting overall urinary health.
  • Research in ‘Phytotherapy Research’ showed that Pycnogenol has strong antioxidant properties, protecting cells from damage and supporting the immune system.
